Anna Shoemaker, originally from Philadelphia, continues her career as a songwriter and singer from the apartment in Brooklyn. After releasing ‘Call Me,’ she comes back after six months with ‘Sick!’
It’s her first single that is supposed to be more mature and has an intentional sound. Comparing this track to, for example, ‘Call Me,’ she has definitely gone through a significant change. While the first one kind of reminds me of anything Barbie-themed, ‘Sick!’ gives me the energy we all need in our lives.
Every single person in this world was, is, or will be crazy in love. This is the way things are. We may try not to be this kind of person, but we will. Maybe we will always stay like that, or perhaps we will decide to learn from our mistakes.
The first two verses are strong enough, and that’s what is needed from singles. From the beginning, you hear the words that make you feel like: ‘OMG, I feel this same!’ and then there is no way you will turn off the track.
‘Wish I could love me, the way I love you.’
It’s a sad truth that many people put others in front of them, especially when they are in love. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not bad to treat your significant other the best way you can, but I, personally, believe that you need to understand how much you are worth first.
Anyway. These kinds of sentences make up the entire song. Anna says aloud about things she does when she’s alone, mad, or misses a person. Finally, she admits she could find someone else, maybe someone better, but that’s not her wish.
‘I’ve been feeling sentimental crying in the bathroom
I could get my shit together, but I just don’t want to,
(…)
I could go and find a new lover, but I just don’t want to
Is it sick I only see you?’
How many times in your life have you heard opinions and bits of advice from others? Yes, your loved ones will be the first to see that something might be wrong with you, but it is annoying to hear constantly: ‘you should move on,’ ‘you can do better.’ This song is the answer to it, and it’s I KNOW. Of course, sometimes we do realize that something is wrong and it could be better, but because everything is solved at the end of the day, we don’t want to lose the good times.
Is it sick? Well… it might be.
The first ten seconds in, and I feel like I’m out clubbing. I close my eyes while my imagination shows hundreds of people dancing and colourful lights above our heads. And then we hear Anna’s delicate voice, which makes us come back to our memories. Her voice suits this kind of sentimental song perfectly. Anna is extremely good at high notes, or at least my lay ear did not hear the impurity in her voice.
I come to the chorus, and think ‘holy sh*t, it’s amazing!’ Then I quickly add it not only to my daily playlist but also my workout motivation. It wouldn’t be a typical workout song, hell no, but somehow it breeds anger in me and makes me want to let it all out.

You can listen to ‘Sick!’ on streaming platforms from September 6th, and soon, in 2022, we can expect her debut album on +1 Records.
